World Press Freedom Day

"A free, secure and independent media is one of the foundations of peace and democracy," said UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on the world Press Freedom Day marked on May 3, 2008. The World Press Freedom Day is designated by by the UN to raise awareness of the importacne of freedom of the press. It was proclaimed in 1993 by the UN General Assembly.
It is intended to remind governemnts of their duty to respect and uphold the right to this freedom as enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
